The SIPRI survey is the world’s most authoritative publication in the category. While it finds that overall arms transactions have gone up 14 percent between 2009 and 2013, China enjoys the dubious honor of being the only country that is ranked in the top five for both import and export of arms, making the communist country the world’s busiest arms trader.

According to the SIPRI report, the United States, Russia, Germany, China and France are the top five arms exporters between 2009 and 2013, while the top five arms importers during the same period are India, China, Pakistan, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia.

The report also indicates that China’s weapons exports increased by 212 percent between 2004-08 and 2009-13, with its global share of arms market tripled from 2 percent to 6 percent.

During the period between 2009 and 2013, China sold weapons to 35 countries, including Pakistan, Bangladesh, Burma, Algeria, Morocco, Indonesia and Venezuela.

The survey also shows that China is the world’s number 2 weapons importer, mainly from Russia [64 percent], France [15 percent] and Ukraine [11 percent].
