President Donald Trump on Monday warned Russian leader Vladimir Putin that he would impose 100% “secondary tariffs” on Moscow’s trading partners if no peace agreement with Ukraine is reached in the next 50 days.<\/p>\n

During his meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, Trump used the phrase \u201csecondary tariffs.\u201d Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick later clarified that the president meant to announce “secondary sanctions” on Russia\u2019s trading partners.<\/p>\n

“Secondary sanctions are meant to punish individuals or entities who do business with a country. Should they take effect on Sept. 2, 50 days from Monday, they are meant to put more pressure on Moscow \u2014 which has already been hit with direct sanctions \u2014 by deterring further business and isolating Russia\u2019s economy,” the New York Post reported.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs the President said in his press conference, Russia will face severe sanctions and tariffs if they do not sign a ceasefire deal in 50 days,\u201d a White House official told The Post.<\/p>\n

Trump also warned that the U.S. will send \u201cbillions of dollars\u201d worth of weapons to Ukraine via Washington\u2019s NATO allies.<\/p>\n

The weapons will include \u201ceverything,\u201d Trump said during his meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in the Oval Office.<\/p>\n

When asked whether \u201cPatriot missiles\u201d or \u201cPatriot batteries\u201d would be sent to Ukraine, the president responded: \u201cIt is all of them. It is a full complement.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump reiterated that other members of NATO will pay for the weapons being sent to Ukraine by raising their defense spending to 5% of GDP over the next decade.<\/p>\n

Rutte agreed that European countries should be \u201cstepping up\u201d and paying for the American-made assets.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is really big,\u201d Rutte said of the announcement. \u201cIt will mean that Ukraine can get its hands on really massive numbers of military equipment, both for air defense, but also missiles, ammunition, etc., etc.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump said he has been “disappointed” with Putin, “because I thought we would have had a deal two months ago, but it doesn\u2019t seem to get there. I speak to him a lot about getting this thing done, and I always hang up and say, \u2018Well, that was a nice phone call.\u2019 And then missiles are launched into Kyiv or some other city. And I said, \u2018Strange.\u2019 And after that happens three or four times, you say the talk doesn\u2019t mean anything.”<\/p>\n

Trump continued: \u201cMy conversations with him are always very pleasant. They say, \u2018Isn\u2019t that good? Very lovely conversation.\u2019 And then the missiles go off that night. I go home, I tell the first lady [Melania Trump], \u2018I spoke with Vladimir today. We had a wonderful conversation.\u2019 She said, \u2018Oh, really? Another city was just hit.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, it\u2019s like \u2014 look, he\u2019s, I don\u2019t want to say he\u2019s an assassin, but he\u2019s a tough guy. He\u2019s been proven over the years. He\u2019s fooled a lot of people. He fooled [George W.] Bush. He fooled a lot of people, [Bill] Clinton, Bush, [Barack] Obama, [Joe] Biden, he didn\u2019t fool me, but what I do say is that at a certain point, you know, ultimately, talk doesn\u2019t talk. It\u2019s got to be action. It\u2019s got to be results.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy wrote in a post to X on Monday that he and Trump had spoken by phone to discuss the U.S. president\u2019s announcement, with the Ukrainian calling it a \u201cvery good conversation.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe discussed the necessary means and solutions with the President to provide better protection for people from Russian attacks and to strengthen our positions,\u201d Zelenskyy wrote. \u201cWe are ready to work as productively as possible to achieve peace.\u201d<\/p>\n
