{"id":149115,"date":"2025-08-26T14:12:04","date_gmt":"2025-08-26T19:12:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/worldtribune.com\/?p=149115"},"modified":"2025-08-26T14:12:04","modified_gmt":"2025-08-26T19:12:04","slug":"blue-states-could-lose-federal-funding-if-english-language-rules-for-truckers-arent-enforced","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldtribune.com\/2025\/blue-states-could-lose-federal-funding-if-english-language-rules-for-truckers-arent-enforced\/","title":{"rendered":"Blue states could lose federal funding if English language rules for truckers aren\u2019t enforced"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em>by<\/em><\/span> <span style=\"color: #006699;\"><strong>WorldTribune<\/strong> <span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em>Staff<\/em><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em>, August 26, 2025 <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldtribune.com\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Real World News<\/span><\/a><em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>California, Washington and New Mexico risk losing millions of dollars in federal funding if they refuse to enforce English language requirements for truckers, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Duffy said an investigation launched after a deadly Florida crash involving an illegal alien truck driver who made an illegal U-turn on Aug. 12 found significant failures in the way all three states are enforcing rules that took effect in June after one of President Donald Trump\u2019s executive orders.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_149116\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-149116\" style=\"width: 451px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-149116\" src=\"http:\/\/worldtribune.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/BadUturn-300x147.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"451\" height=\"221\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-149116\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Three people were killed in Florida after semi-truck driver Harjinder Singh made an illegal U-Turn on the Florida Turnpike, locked all lanes, and collided with a minivan.\/ Video image<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Truckers are supposed to be disqualified if they can\u2019t demonstrate English proficiency, Duffy said.<\/p>\n<p>Harjinder Singh, the illegal alien whose U-turn on the Florida turnpike investigators say resulted in the deaths of three people, was issued a trucker\u2019s license by the state of California although he could not read or speak English and could only identify one or two traffic signs.<\/p>\n<p>Duffy said Singh should not have ever been given a commercial driver\u2019s license because of his immigration status.<\/p>\n<p>Duffy added that it is a safety issue \u2014 not a political one \u2014 because truckers need to understand road signs and be able to communicate with law enforcement about what they are hauling if they are pulled over or what happened if there is an accident.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is about keeping people safe on the road. Your families, your kids, your spouses, your loved ones, your friends. We all use the roadway, and we need to make sure that those who are driving big rigs \u2014 semis \u2014 can understand the road signs, that they\u2019ve been well trained,\u201d Duffy said.<\/p>\n<p>Duffy said states will lose money from the Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program if they don\u2019t comply with the rules within 30 days.
