{"id":149134,"date":"2025-08-27T12:20:16","date_gmt":"2025-08-27T17:20:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/worldtribune.com\/?p=149134"},"modified":"2025-08-27T12:20:16","modified_gmt":"2025-08-27T17:20:16","slug":"19-arrested-in-massive-cartel-crackdown-in-washington-state","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldtribune.com\/2025\/19-arrested-in-massive-cartel-crackdown-in-washington-state\/","title":{"rendered":"19 arrested in massive cartel crackdown in Washington state"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em>by<\/em><\/span> <span style=\"color: #006699;\"><strong>WorldTribune<\/strong> <span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em>Staff \/ <\/em><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldtribune.com\/category\/breaking\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #006699;\"><strong>247 Real News<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em> August 27, 2025<\/em> <\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Federal, state, and local authorities combined to bust what they said was a Sinaloa cartel-connected drug trafficking operation that flooded western Washington state with enough fentanyl to kill everyone in the Seattle-Tacoma metro area.<\/p>\n<p>In one of the largest cartel busts in the region in years, authorities arrested 19 individuals who were part of the operation which used semi-trucks to smuggle fentanyl, methamphetamine, cocaine, and heroin into the Pacific northwest.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_149144\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-149144\" style=\"width: 433px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-149144\" src=\"http:\/\/worldtribune.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Cartelbust-300x146.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"433\" height=\"211\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-149144\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>DEA<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThis Sinaloa Cartel-affiliated drug trafficking group brought misery and death to our community,\u201d said David F. Reames, Special Agent in Charge of the DEA Seattle Field Division. \u201cThe work of the DEA and our partners seized hundreds of pounds of methamphetamine and fentanyl from this group that could have yielded a staggering 6.9 million lethal doses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Law enforcement officials said the drug ring was led by Rosario Abel \u201cJoaquin\u201d Camargo Banuelos, 31, and his brother Francisco \u201cFernando\u201d Camargo Banuelos, 24.<\/p>\n<p>The 37-count federal indictment names multiple conspirators, including truck driver Isabel Villarreal Zapien, 44, who allegedly moved large drug shipments and was arrested earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>Other indicted defendants include couriers, redistributors, and stash house operators from both Mexico and Washington state.<\/p>\n<p>Among those charged:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u2022 Jose Mejia Ortiz, 30, Mexico \u2013 courier\/distributor<br \/>\n\u2022 Juan Carlos Garcia Olais, 28, Mexico \u2013 courier\/distributor<br \/>\n\u2022 Jorge Boneo Nieblas, 21 \u2013 distributor\/stash house attendant<br \/>\n\u2022 Karim Davis, 48, Everett \u2013 redistributor<br \/>\n\u2022 Tyler Johnson, 38, Shoreline \u2013 redistributor<br \/>\n\u2022 Alex Phan, 19, Everett \u2013 redistributor<\/p>\n<p>Several defendants face firearms charges tied to the trafficking operation.<\/p>\n<p>Four additional suspects were arrested during search warrant raids on Aug. 4, including Derel Gabelein, 37, of Whidbey Island, where police seized meth, fentanyl, and other drugs. Another defendant, John Hardman, 57, of Everett, was found with $50,000 cash and a brick of fentanyl powder stamped with a swastika.<\/p>\n<p>The indictments reach all the way back to cartel leaders in Mexico, said acting U.S. Attorney Teal Luthy Miller: \u201cThis indictment names not only the redistributors in the Western District of Washington, but also the brothers in Mexico who profited by spreading their poisons and addiction in the Pacific Northwest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thirteen defendants are currently in custody, while six remain at large. Due to the scale of the drugs seized, many face mandatory minimum sentences of at least 10 years in federal prison.<\/p>\n<p>The operation was spearheaded by the DEA and Seattle Police Department, with support from Homeland Security Investigations (HIS), under Operation Take Back America, a nationwide Justice Department initiative aimed at dismantling cartels and transnational criminal organizations.
