Never-Trumpers within the Republican party gleefully skipped out of the U.S. Capitol on Saturday for the start of a 37-day vacation, essentially flipping off President Donald Trump and his millions of supporters as they sauntered out, analysts say.
Townhall.com’s Matt Vespa summed up the scene:
“Sen. John Thune and the rest of the panican GOP caucus wanted to go home. They held a really early-morning vote around 5 AM to confirm Todd Blanche as the 88th attorney general of the United States, but then moved to adjourn. There weren’t enough senators to kill the August recess. Democrats certainly won’t do it, and Thune noted 15 to 20 Republicans who’d rather let Democrats run them over when they retake the chamber at some point, kill the filibuster, and pass their extreme policies as we watch helplessly like infants. Why? Well, that’s what these Republicans do: face an open nuclear reactor and think they’ll be rewarded for their bravery when all they do is end up dead.”
Speaking of dead, what about Sen. Mitch McConnell?
The Kentucky Republican has been MIA for 56 days.
“We are currently witnessing one of the most curious spectacles in the history of American politics: Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell is almost certainly dead — but he’s still voting in the Senate,” independent journalist Emerald Robinson noted.
The Rinos who walked in the flesh out of the Senate chamber on Saturday did so again without passing the SAVE America Act.
President Donald Trump’s key election integrity legislation “could’ve been passed if the filibuster had been nuked, but these traditional Republicans and their laughable affinity for the old days are what’s going to destroy us,” Vespa wrote.
“No one gets brownie points for being the bigger person? Who cares if the liberal media has a meltdown over nuking the filibuster? We’re talking about worrying about the reactions of people who already hate us.”
Perched atop the obstructionist pile, critics say, are Sens. Thom Tillis of North Carolina and John Cornyn of Texas. Tillis is not seeking reelection. Cornyn did, but was thrashed in the GOP primary by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.
Writing for The Federalist on Aug. 7, Samuel Kimzey noted: “Tillis and Cornyn are simply the clearest examples of a repeated pattern of obstruction of President Trump’s agenda by establishment Republican senators who dislike Trump and the way he is remaking the Republican Party. These senators manifest their obstruction by refusing to eliminate the filibuster or utilize the talking filibuster, pass the SAVE America Act and other urgently needed legislative reforms, confirm some of Trump’s best nominees, or eliminate the outdated “blue slips” process for judicial confirmations, which only helps the left.”
“For far too long, the Republican establishment — particularly the Republican senators — have been eager to sell out their voters in preference for cheap foreign labor, arming supposed ‘allies’ in overseas conflicts, and making performative political displays in Washington while refusing to play hardball against the Democrats.”
As for McConnell, Robinson pointed out that, if he had died in office before Aug. 3, Kentucky law would trigger a special election for his Senate seat.
Robinson continued: “Even stranger than the charade was the fact that McConnell’s wife Elaine Chao was nowhere to be found when Mitch was rushed to the hospital because she was in China — at the Shanghai Jiao Tong University for her twelfth visit.
“You must remember: Chao’s family owns a large shipping empire, Foremost Group, which has deep connections to the Chinese Communist Party’s leadership.
“Rather than rush back to visit her ailing husband, Elaine Chao stayed in China for a meeting with the Chinese Vice President on June 17th.”
Thune will gavel the Senate back into session on Monday, Sept. 14.
Kimzey noted for The Federalist: “Ultimately, this obstruction from anti-Trump GOP senators is severely threatening the Republicans for the upcoming midterms. By stalling the MAGA agenda, they are helping to impede Trump and make it harder for the administration to accumulate wins they can advertise to the public. And passing the SAVE America Act — which, after all, ought to be the Republican senators’ top priority — could easily help secure the midterm elections and all future elections against the ubiquitous threat of election fraud that so frequently favors the Left.”
